چکیده

R etrobulbar hemorrhages may occur from facial trauma, orbital surgery, and peribulbar or retrobulbar injections. Although a retrobulbar hemorrhage reportedly occurs in less than 2% of retrobulbar anesthetic injections, it may result in a devastating loss of vision by compression of the circulation from mechanical tamponade, central retinal artery occlusion, or optic atrophy if not detected and treated immediately. The majority of retrobulbar hemorrhages can be managed conservatively with digital ocular massage or intravenous acetazolamide or mannitol. However, further surgical intervention is indicated when vision is at risk.

Traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage: emergent decompression by lateral canthotomy and cantholysis.

Traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage may result in acute loss of vision that is reversible when recognized and treated promptly. A case of traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage is presented. The technique of emergent orbital decompression by lateral canthotomy and cantholysis is described. The anatomy of the lateral canthus and the surgical procedure are illustrated by gross dissection.

Visual recovery following emergent orbital decompression in traumatic retrobulbar haemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION Acute retrobulbar haemorrhage is a potentially sight-threatening condition, and can follow retrobulbar anaesthesia or trauma to the orbit. Acute loss of vision can occur with retrobulbar haemorrhage and is reversible if the condition is recognised and treated early. CLINICAL PICTURE We report a case of acute retrobulbar haemorrhage following orbital trauma in a 78-year-old Chines...

Congenital Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET) of the Orbit

Purpose: To report a case of the congenital primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the orbit. Case Report: The patient was a 2-week-old neonate referred to the oculoplastic clinic with right eye proptosis from birth. The neonate was a full term with a history of difficult vaginal delivery. At an initial examination, the ecchymosis of the medial right upper lid was noted. At an initial CT sca...

An Unusual Differential Diagnosis of Orbital Cavernous Hemangioma: Ancient Schwannoma

Schwannomas are rare lesions of the orbit that can be confused with cavernous hemangioma on imaging studies. We report the case of an 84-year-old woman with a 9-year history of a tumoral lesion in the inferolateral left orbit. The imaging studies did not reveal specific characteristics, only bone remodeling due to the long evolution of the tumor. The patient underwent complete excision of the t...

Computed Tomographic Angiogram of an Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm Causing Acute Retrobulbar Optic Neuropathy: A Case Report

Three-dimensional computed tomographic (3D-CT) angiography is a widespread imaging modality for intracranial vascular lesions. However, 3D-CT angiograms of an anterior communicating artery aneurysm associated with acute retrobulbar optic neuropathy have not been previously described. We present 3D-CT angiograms of an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery that caused subarachnoid hemorrh...
